Discrepancy between the number of genes and the Count field

Discrepancy between the number of genes and the Count field

Postby Guest » Wed Aug 21, 2013 12:21 pm

I used the Functional Annotation Chart for a list of 119 Genes with Gene Names from RefSeq such as (CLSPN, HIST1H4M, HMGN2, KNTC1, POLA1, HIST1H2BM.....) for Mouse. I selected the Background as Mouse. In the Functional Annotation Chart Output for a certain "category" and "term" , the "count" shows "16" but the "Gene list" has 20 gene names listed for the same category and term. This is the case for almost every set of "category" and "term". Could you please explain the reason for this? I am under the impression that the "count" should be equal to the num of genes listed under the "Genes" field in the Chart output.

The DAVID analysis is centered around DAVID genes which is an internal id created to bring together the main databases that make up the DAVID Knowledgebase. You may read more about this at http://david.abcc.ncifcrf.gov/helps/knowledgebase/DAVID_gene.html . Once a list is uploaded into DAVID, all analysis is performed using the DAVID genes including the counting for statistical analysis. In your case, I suspect that a few of your symbols fell under the same DAVID gene.
